One of the long-term projects I was involved with during my time as a Band and Orchestra Libraries at UW-Madison was Oversize Score Preservation. Both libraries have collections of scores that do not physically fit with the rest of the printed parts for each piece. As a result, these scores need to be stored separately.
I focused initially on cataloging and assessing the collections in both libraries both to make them searchable as well as to assess the scores for damage and usability. After an initial assessment, I worked with Ensemble Librarian Cat Richmond and the other student librarians, to pull out and iteratively repair damaged scores, search for missing items, and move specific scores into archival folders. This was especially important given the inclusion of manuscripts and facsimile editions of scores in these collections.
